Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. at the University of Florida. Before starting graduate school, he worked for five years in legislative politics in the District Office of former Congressman Peter J. Roskam (IL-06) and at the Minnesota House of Representatives. He joined the Political Science Department as a Visiting Assistant Professor in 2021.
His research focuses on political negotiation, American Political Development, and policy change. He is especially interested in how legislators use strategic voting and dimension manipulation to influence the way their colleagues vote on legislation, as well as the consequences these strategies have on policy content. Dr. Smith has been selected for a Library of Congress Fellowship in Congressional Policymaking to further his research.
