Dave Neal has studied the social dimensions of disasters (e.g., tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, tsunami, landslides, blizzards, explosions, hazardous materials) for almost 30 years. He has published papers related to preparedness, recovery and mitigation, but his main research focus has looked at topics related to effective organizational response, and issues in disaster and higher education. His academic publications include papers in The International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, Disasters, The Journal of Emergency Management, Sociological Focus and others. Sponsors of his research include FEMA, NASA, American National Red Cross, and the Texas Division of Emergency Management. Recently, he was part of a National Science Foundation sponsored research team to study the issue of body handling following the tsunami in India. He received his bachelors degree in education from Bowling Green State University with a major in political science and minor in sociology. He also received his masters degree from BGSU in sociology. In 1985 he obtained his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in sociology and while there served as a research assistant with the Disaster Research Center.
